The graphite pencil is perfect for drawing lines. The line is the essential component of a drawing which allows you to create outlines and define shapes, either real or abstract. The line is used to define volume and space and give structure to a surface, etc. Graphite pencils can be used to draw in two different ways: with the point or by tilting the pencil and using the side of the lead.

The point of the pencil can be used to create dots and draw lines, one on top of the other, or in a crisscross pattern. Tonal differences between light and shade can be created by drawing lines very close together or far apart, or by thickening the strokes in the darker areas and making them narrower in the lighter areas. The lines should be very close together or in a criss-cross pattern in the area where a darker shade is required and far apart in the case of a lighter shade. Drawing with the side of the pencil point is ideal for sketching. Different shades can be obtained by applying varying degrees of pressure to the sides of the lead.
